MAIN REGIONAL TOURIST DESTINATIONS
BANSKO-a town-museum with typical architecture, cuisine and language dialect.
It has become one of the best ski centres in Europe. The town lies at the foot of the highest section of Pirin at an altitude of 930 m on the banks of the Glazne river. Bansko keeps 120 museum houses from the Bulgarian National Revival Period with murals and fret work, permanent ethnographic and icon exhibitions. Its old houses with spacious yards surrounded by high stone walls and small, thick, iron-clad doors are very interesting. Remarkable monuments of Bansko icon painting and wood carving school can be seen in the Trinity Church(1835) and the Virgin Mary Church( 16th Century). The master painters filled the iconographic scheme with life and bursts of colour, previously unknown in the Christian world. Bansko is the most popular and convenient point of departure for the highest and most majestic section of Pirin mountain. The Rozhen Monastery of the Nativity of Mother of God
It rises high above Melnik’s sandstone pyramids and is one of the few medieval monasteries( 13thC) well preserved until today. In the church of the monastery we find murals and icons dated back to the 16th, 17th, 18th Century.
The village of Kovachevitsa
An architectural and historical reserve which has preserved its 18th Century authenticity. Here one can forget the crazy rhythm of civilization walking through the narrow streets with houses made of stone.
The village of Dobarsko
The legend says it was founded by the blinded soldiers of the 14000 defeated army of the Bulgarian Tsar Samuil after the Battle of Belasitsa with the Byzantine emperor in 1018. On their way to the Rila Monastery in search of shelter they discovered the magic curative spring in the church yard which is said to have healed their wounds.
The church ‘St.Teodor Tiron and St.Teodor Stratilat’( 12th. C) in the village is in the UNESCO List of World Heritage. Its unconventional murals make it unique and extraordinary- the image of Jesus in an object, close in shape to a spaceship, Virgin Mary in a capsule of red light, the Holy Saints ’portraits with a kind of helmets rather than a halo around their heads.
Rupite
The dwelling place of the famous Bulgarian clairvoyant Vanga who will be included in the world catalogue “The 100 Personalities of the Century” prepared in the USA. She considered Rupite a sacred spot with extraordinary cosmic energy and power. Here we find ruins of ancient settlements dated from the 4th.C. BC to the 6th. C. AD. This is a pilgrim rather than tourist destination. The church ‘St. Petka”was built in her memory and attracts believers all year round.
The Belitsa Bear Park ”Four Paws”.
A home of the wild brown bear. Twenty six former dancing bears live there in a surrounding as close to their natural habitat as possible.
You can also spend one day visiting Melnik, Razlog, Velingrad and many more interesting places.
